5 Useful Tips for Hiking With Dogs in Santa Monica

Dog Hiking Tips from your Santa Monica Veterinarian

Hiking is a great way to get outdoors, enjoy fresh air, and bond with your dog.  Here are some tips from your Santa Monica Veterinarian to help everyone enjoy their hike.

  1. Bring plenty of water.  Dogs should drink 1oz H2O per lb on a normal day and can drink 2x that much when active.
  2. Timing matters - in warm climates, hike in the mornings or evenings.  In cold climates, use the daylight to your advantage.
  3. Start with short hikes for dogs who are getting into shape.
  4. Check their feet!  Paw pads can easily wear down.  Protective booties are a great way to help feet stay free of debris such as foxtails, too.
  5. Bring a leash.  Even for dogs with great recall, a leash is handy to have in case of emergency (such as when hikers alert you to a rattlesnake ahead on a trail)!
